Monica Fawzy Plastic Surgeon

EDUCATION

With a multilingual background, Monica was educated in a French Lycée then sent to Boarding School at Roedean in Brighton. Initially interested in pursuing a career in art, a family member’s illness led her to follow her parents’ footsteps into Medicine, qualifying as a doctor from Bristol Medical School in 2002.

She taught Anatomy at the University of Oxford and Guys Hospital in London, and trained in Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery, Intensive Care and Plastic Surgery before becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2006.

She then undertook further specialist training in Plastic Surgery in various centres in the East of England, cementing this training with a year-long fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery in Paris, followed by a second fellowship in Microsurgery in Cambridge. She furthered her experience with visits to various centres in Europe and the USA, both before and after completing her formal training in 2015, when she joined the GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery.

NHS APPOINTMENT

She was appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in 2016 with a subspecialty interest in head and neck microsurgical reconstruction and paediatric plastic surgery in one of the busiest units in the UK. Once there, she established and now leads a dedicated regional tertiary referral service for facial palsy patients.

OTHER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

She is a member of the leadership team of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPRAS)- initially as an elected member of the Council when she represented the East of England, and then as their Chair of Communications.

She has held positions of leadership with regard to patient safety and governance in her NHS trust, as well as education- as regional Deputy Program Director and Educational Director of the post-graduate training scheme for plastic surgeons in the East of England, and as an author of a textbook that helps trainee plastic surgeons to successfully prepare for the final plastic surgery FRCS(Plast) exam, one of the final hurdles before becoming a consultant.

She is passionate about extending these training opportunities to surgeons in less fortunate areas of the world and has served with several surgical charities to this end, such as BFIRST (a British Plastic Surgery Charity that provides tailor made surgical programs for surgeons in the developing world), and UK Med (a British Charity and WHO partner that provides urgent medical care in disaster zones).

In addition to being a member of BAPRAS, she is also a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons (BAAPS), and an international member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Her private practice is based in central London and is featured in the Tatler Address Book.
