Liposuction removes fat from your body by inserting small thin suction tubes in the areas in question. This is not a treatment for obesity but may be useful in select individuals to improve body contour by helping to remove some fat from areas that are resistant to weight loss and exercise.

It may be combined with lipomodelling techniques, where the fat is processed and re-injected into the face or breast to add volume and improve tissue quality.

Depending on the extent, it may be performed under local or general anaesthesia. You will usually be allowed home the same day.

You may notice extensive bruising and swelling in the areas that have been treated. Wearing a supportive garment helps this to resolve more rapidly, and exercise should be avoided until this resolves entirely.

You will also notice altered sensation in these areas, which usually improves over the coming weeks to months.

You should aim to take 1-2 weeks off work.
